History of Wilkes University Television

Here is a portrait of Mr. Shelburne

Wilkes University Television was not always what it is today. When the department started back in the mid 1980s, the station was not even a station at all. Wilkes was not in charge of Channel 66 (now Channel 15 today) on Service Electric Cable back at the time. The studio was a small space on the second floor of the Stark Learning Center at Wilkes University. The studio wasn’t very large, and the equipment was considerably old and unreliable. Most programs were taped either on VHS, or 3 1/4" U-Matic tape and were normally displayed on monitors for public viewing within the Stark Learning Center lobby. Unfortunately, most of this programming was considerably low in content compared to today’s standards and video quality was doable, but not spectacular. Even so, over the years the studio continued to help educate prospective communication majors to pursue a career in telecommunications.

Here is a shot of what the old studio looked like from on the second floor of the stark learning center in the late 80s into the early 90s.

The equipment was considerably old and had a tendancy to fail on a regular basis.

The above is a shot of the old audio mixing console.

Hey! It's Carl Brigido in the background.

Wilkes University TV did not have cable channel 15 years ago. Programming was recorded and broadcasted to the main lobby of the Stark Learning Center and a few other locations on campus. From time to time, programming was recorded and sent to other stations like WVIA or PCN.

Here is a quick view of the old Character Generator and teleprompt systems.

Below are two examples of some of the work that was produced by wilkes university students back at the time:

Road To Nowhere- Assembled by a group of COMM students for a grade in communications course back in the late 80s. (The audio for this has been dubbed over with a new copy due to poor audio conditions with the original tape)
Wilkes College Television News - This was the Wilkes' version of Wilkes World back at the time. Students would put together news packages and produce a weekly news program that aired on television sets around the campus.

In 1995, our chief engineer, Carl Brigido, along with a grant from Mr. Thomas P. Shelburne and several other donors, built the television studio we now have today in the lower level of the Stark Learning Center. With this new facility, we have the power, technology, and space to create high-end video productions that can either be taped and/or broadcasted on the new Educational Access Channel 15 on Service Electric Cable which serves the city of Wilkes-Barre and a few outer laying areas.

Today, Wilkes University Television is constantly trying to find new ways to make Channel 15 a channel that everyone can enjoy, while serving the entire Wilkes-Barre community and Wilkes University. Since 1995, we have made a considerable amount of changes to the station in which we work in. We used to tape programs on either VHS, or SVHS, or 3 ¼” U-Matic Tape. We now have installed many digital video editing systems which now allow us to tape most of our programs on digital videotape and air them on Channel 15. We still look forward to future developments down in studio and we look forward to discovering new ways of entertaining you.
